The Berlin Veterans Foundation, Inc.:

Admiral Carey grew up in Berlin, WI, a town of 5,000 on the border of Waushara and Green Lake Counties along the Fox River. Actually, his first 13 years were spent on a farm about two miles East of Berlin where the family had a beef and dairy cattle farm along almost a half mile of the river. He remembers the end of World War II and the local men returning from the war, and he can recall his Dad’s stories of World War I when his Dad served in France with the horse cavalry in the 325th Remount Squadron. As he grew up and participated in the Boy Scouts and numerous other local activities and organizations, he quickly learned that most of the leaders in those organizations were military veterans and that he was learning a tremendous amount about leadership and organization and discipline and survival from these veterans. Little did he know that one day he would be able to put all those lessons to work when he himself entered military service in the U. S. Navy during the Vietnam War and served aboard the U. S. S. TOPEKA [CLG-8] in the South China Sea during that war. And by so doing, he became a member of a very long line of military veterans “From Berlin, WI” that included not only his Dad in World War I, both of his brothers post-World War II, two Great Uncles and his Great Grandfather in the Civil War, and dozens of friends, classmates, relatives, teachers, and the entire fabric that makes up this small Midwestern town that was to provide the background for his persona and values throughout all the rest of his life.

In recent years, several patriotic citizens in Berlin formed the Berlin Veterans Foundation, Inc. and raised money to build a Veterans Memorial in a park on the Fox River known as Riverside Park. As a part of this memorial, the foundation also established an internet website that among other things, provides the history of the effort to build this memorial, and also features listings of many of Berlin’s military veterans so that future generations can see who from their hometown signed on the dotted line to give their life if need be to ensure their neighbors freedom, who in fact paid this supreme sacrifice and who was wounded and who served for years or decades, and “who did what in which war when”. It turns out that the young men and women from Berlin, WI and the surrounding area are in fact, incredibly patriotic and a much higher percentage than normal enter the military service in both peacetime and war. All this was very impressive to Admiral Carey and he decided that the Berlin Veterans Freedom Living Memorial, their Foundation, and their website and the military histories on that site were highly deserving of recognition and support by the Admiral Carey Foundation. The leadership of the BVF, Inc. was contacted and the deliberations that followed resulted in an agreement for the BVF, Inc. to be endowed by the Admiral Carey Foundation in perpetuity. A portion of the endowment is to be dedicated to the upkeep and maintenance of the veterans memorials in Berlin, WI, and the balance of the funds are to be dedicated to the study, research, writing and recording of the histories and service of ALL of Berlin’s veterans, past, present and future, coordinated with all of the veterans organizations in Berlin and with the Berlin Historical Society and the local school systems and youth groups, with particular focus on the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, to ensure that all future generations are aware of the tremendous Berlin Patriots that served that all their families, friends and neighbors might live in freedom. Admiral Carey has entitled this program “Berlin, WI: Home of the Free Because of the Brave” and continues to work with the BVF to ensure that this program is fully ready to begin all these programs and projects once his endowment begins the funding process.
